NEW HAMPSHIRE
Census Reports
1950
==============
UPDATED AS
OF MARCH 1, 2023
In the
1940 census and especially now in the 1950 Census, the handwriting on the
sheets is a bit better. But now that people are using Ancestry and Family
Search and putting their family trees up on the sites, and the sites themselves
have much better search engines and send you to a whole bunch of info docs and
records. I now can find a family sheet on about everyone and many on the wife’s
side. When I first started doing this in the very early 1970s, all that was
available to see was up to the 1900. There was no such thing as on-line and the
computers then were the size of a locker room. I had to drive out to Waltham,
Massachusetts to the U. S. Library, beg for a film real of the dates and State
I wanted and then look at it through a visual device in a back dark room and
literally go page to page, county to county and write the info down on paper
with a pencil. At that time, really the most people doing genealogy were older
women, mostly retired school teachers in their 70s and 80s, who would send you
hand written trees and info and stuff that they had back a couple of
generations. Once in a while I would get an actual typewritten document. Wow!
Got much better in the 1990s. Now it is soooo easy to get info you didn’t think
was possible. Back in the 70s I tried calling folks, and got a hold of several who
had info. Now just an e-mail brings in a thousand year’s worth of info. Anyway,
really enjoy these censuses, and if you can add or correct, please let me know
so I can help others.

Here is part of an article in Country Doctor: he lives in the small village of Lyme, New Hampshire, lies south west of the White Mountains; two miles further west the Connecticut River divides New Hampshire from Vermont. Dartmouth Medical School and the Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital are ten miles to the south, in Hanover. In 1935 the town of Lyme, which had a population of about 900, had been without a doctor for some time. Despite the great depression residents voted at a town meeting to raise $500 for the support of a doctor for the ensuing year. Bill Putnam was finishing an 18 month internship at the Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital when the vacancy in Lyme came to his attention. The position was ideal for his requirements; as a 9 year old he had barely escaped death in the influenza epidemic of 1918 and, inspired by his attending physician, had decided then to become a doctor in a small New Hampshire town. And so it was that on 1 January 1936 William F Putnam, M.D. hung out his shingle - or put up his plate - in Lyme, having made his first house call the night before. "Doc Putnam" had begun his career. He stayed in Lyme for 42 years, and his practice expanded to include 24 communities in two states. He once calculated that his territory encompassed more than 1000 square miles.

February 1, 1915. Then when she married Wendell in 1927, she was listed as
Myrtie Bassler, daughter of Charles Davis and Clara

He was listed George I. Putnam, handwriting thing, J not I. They lived here in

behind his car. He died according to one person in 1922 and another in 1929. I
found somewhere he was just divorced for the 4th time and listed as George
Pekman, but can’t find it now. Anyway, Addie is the
widow of George. She was born in Stratford County April 17, 1900 and will die
in Berwick, Maine in May 1971. George is spelled as George I, George T, George
Jefferson, and several last names. But…should be a Putnam.
